5 Healthy Lifestyle Habits You Can Begin Today

Always full disclosure here! Some products in this post were sent to me for free to try and review. I did not receive any compensation for this post or my product review, and all opinions are 100% my own. For more information, you can view the full disclosure policy here. Thank you!

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you try to define a healthy lifestyle? Is it physical fitness and regular exercise? Healthy eating habits? Maybe emotional and mental health define a healthy lifestyle for you? Regardless, sometimes when we hold our own lives up next to a picture of what we think a "healthy lifestyle" looks like, all we see is a bunch of unobtainable goals, restrictions, and limitations that - lets be honest - nobody has the time OR the energy for. As a working mom, my time during the day is extremely limited. I am definitely still growing into the role of being a "work-at-home-mom", so things like finding my routine and prioritizing things on my to-do list can be straight-up overwhelming and very frustrating at times. I feel like I'm being stretched in 8 different directions, and along with that comes the mom "guilt" for having my attention be divided all day long. Needless to say, I hardly give much thought to exercise and physical fitness. I know it SHOULD be a part of my routine, but I just cannot find adequate time for it at all during the day!

I wanted to create this post sharing five practical and healthy lifestyle habits - that don't include fitness - that you can begin today without carving out a 30 minute window into your already hectic schedule. Don't get me wrong, physical fitness and exercise is definitely important when it comes to staying healthy, but if I'm being totally honest, sometimes my "activity" goal for the day is just to stand up out of my chair for a few minutes and walk around. These tips I want to share with you are not a "quick fix" to any problem and they don't replace the value of physical fitness - I just wanted to offer some other practical solutions for someone who might struggle finding time to work out. Whether you're trying to make it through your 9-5 with a baby on your lap (like me, most of the time!) or you're trying to cram as much as you can into the few precious hours you have to yourself in the afternoon, these little habits are easy to implement, and can make a BIG difference in your overall health and well being.

1. Drink More Water

This first tip might be the easiest of them all, requires ZERO trips to the grocery store, and is a new habit that you can begin literally right this second. AND, it has a huge impact on your health. According to this article from the Mayo Clinic, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine recommend at least 11.5oz of fluids per day for women, and 15.5oz for men to stay hydrated. Other sources claim you should drink half of your body weight in ounces per day. But what if you just don't feel thirsty, and "forget" to drink anything? In their article, the Mayo Clinic warns that if you aren't thirsty, there's a good chance you're already dehydrated. The easiest way for me to keep up with my daily water intake is to drink from a cup with a straw - I don't know why this works, but I've talked to other people who feel the same. So get yourself a cute cup and set a timer on your phone reminding you to take a drink, OR make it a goal to drink x amount of ounces by a certain time. (And if you don't have a cup with a straw, any cup will do for now!)

2. Switch to "Green" Household Cleaners

Even before I had a baby, I started making the switch to using household cleaners that have little to no harsh chemicals in the ingredients. It's crazy how some of the products we use on a daily basis can be incredibly toxic, and yet we still handle them and breathe them in every time we use them. I've tried a few different brands, and I've consistently loved the Method brand - you can buy these from Target or on Vitacost.com (which is quickly becoming my online shopping obsession, btw). The Method website provides consumers with a TON of valuable information about their products, ingredients, and even the packaging materials. According to the website, they never add things such as parabens, chlorine bleach, ammonia or triclosan (just to name a few) to any of their products. Switching to cleaner and greener household cleansers is one small step you can take towards a healthier and chemical-free lifestyle!

3. Start Taking A Multi-Vitamin or Probiotic

It's so difficult these days to get all of the vitamins and minerals our body needs simply through the foods we eat - sad, but true. When I was pregnant, I was especially conscious of what I was putting into my body, because not only did I need the nutrients to support myself, but my growing baby as well. Certain vitamin deficiencies can be dangerous for fetal development. I love the NatureMade Prenatals, I even continued taking these after Ezra was born just to make sure we were both getting enough vitamins! I just recently started taking the Up4 brand of probiotics, and I have no complaints so far. The vitamin aisle can be a little overwhelming at first, but do some research before you go, and find out whats best for you and your current needs.

4. Eat Breakfast

They don't call it the "most important meal of the day" for nothing, but unfortunately it's the one meal that people usually skip, especially if you're rushed in the morning. It doesn't have to be some elaborate, gourmet meal; eggs with fruit, oatmeal, or a smoothie packed with greens can give you an amazing kickstart of energy and nutrients at the very start of your day. In college I made some pretty terrible breakfast choices (S'more's poptarts....everyday....) but I eventually realized that eating a breakfast packed with sugar and carbs was leaving me feeling more sluggish and tired throughout the rest of the day. A healthy, balanced breakfast can be one major lifestyle change that could transform your health for the better!

5. Switch to Gentle Bath & Body Products

More and more companies in the realm of personal care are coming out with simpler products with less ingredients, and I think it's awesome! You might already know that your skin is the largest organ of your body, so why wouldn't you want to be extra mindful of the things you put on your skin? I just recently started using Derma-E products in my skincare routine, and I love everything about them so far. Not only are their products vegan and cruelty-free, but they are also free of harmful ingredients such as parabens or sodium-laurel sulfates (read more about their ingredients on their website)

Another product I've been loving recently is the Herbal Essences Bio Renew blue ginger and micellar water shampoo and foam conditioner. These products were sent to me for free by Influenster to try and review, and I was actually really pleased to see that both of these products contain ZERO parabens or colorants! I was excited to add these to my collection of beauty products that are free from some of the most harmful ingredients. Not only do these products smell amazing, but they left my hair soft and shiny without feeling weighed down. I don't usually use conditioner because my hair is so fine and gets weighed down easily, but the foaming conditioner softened it without taking away volume. I love that I can take care of my hair while still maintaining my clean beauty standard.
